Diane Roy – Fibre Art Sculptor
Born in Ontario, Diane Roy grew up in Abitibi-Témiscamingue, Québec. In 1977 she received a D.E.C in Art and Literature from the college of Rouyn in Quebec. In 1980 she received a degree in Fine Arts and Education from the University of Quebec in Chicoutimi.
She took part in an exhibition that toured across Canada in 1980 shortly after her graduation. She moved to Edmonton in 1982 and lived there until 1986. This was where she began the production of her fibre sculptures. Which she did with the help of a production grant that she received from Alberta Culture in 1984.
In 1986 she moved to Vancouver, British Columbia where she has resided ever since. From 1986 until 1990 she studied the medium of holography, while pursuing her work in fibre art and education.
She had the opportunity to represent Canada in an international art show in Morocco in 1989. She also exhibited her work in Japan in 1994, in France in 1996 as well as in Spain in 1998.
In 2014 she did the first retrospective of her work dating from 1980 to 2014. She was recently commissioned to create her first public art project in North Delta B.C in 2015.
Her work is occasionally exhibited through the loan program at the YVR.
In 2023 she presented her latest solo exhibition “The Deep and the Shallows “at the Surrey Art Gallery.
She has participated in 8 international, 13 solo and 20 group exhibitions in British Columbia and other provinces across Canada.
She has used organic and recycled materials and a variety of different techniques to create the body of work that you can see today. She works instinctively and chooses materials that catch her attention when an idea arises.
In her most recent period, she has introduced colour using recycled synthetic materials, such as plasticized aluminum. Coming to terms with art and nature is a challenge. Shapes and textures impose themselves, materialize and become the expression of nature.
